How Best to Manage Pain after Suffering a Car Accident with Injury

When a person is involved in an auto accident, injuries may not result in pain immediately. It is vital to be seen by a physician after any accident in case of any spine problems or internal injury. Early intervention often leads to a proper recovery.

Auto accidents

Auto accidents can happen to almost anyone. Injuries sustained in a car accident can range from something very minor to pain that is incapacitating. Traumatic injuries are some of the most difficult and complex cases that are treated. Traumatic injuries often include:

  • Neurological injuries
  • Injuries to the brain
  • Bone fracture
  • Spinal injury

Even a very minor accident can cause traumatic injuries. If you experience any of the common symptoms of a traumatic injury, you need to seek medical attention immediately. In fact, after any auto accident, you should be seen by a physician – pain or no pain.

Severity of injuries

Symptoms will vary depending on the severity of injuries. Medical professionals will recognize your symptoms, diagnose your injuries and help with recovery. This often involves pain management.

Persistent pain

Persistent pain is very common among the millions of people in the United States who are seen every year at emergency rooms following car crashes.

New study

There have been several studies where researchers have studied the two most common pain-relief drugs –opioids such as oxycodone and NSAIDS such as ibuprofen –have found the risk of reporting pain six weeks after a crash was no different between patients prescribed either medication at the emergency department.

What is significant?

What does differ significantly is the likelihood that person initially prescribed opioids can quickly become addicted to them. Addiction to and overdoses from the use of opioids, has become a major health problem currently in the United States. And basically, most emergency medical health professionals currently will prescribe ibuprofen.

After 6 weeks if the pain is still persistent, then a return visit to family physician will be needed to follow up with further testing to see exactly where and what the injury is.
