The Benefits of Magnesium for those suffering with GAD

GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) is at an all-time high right now with 6.8 million adults currently suffering. This disorder is a hard one to shed light one, but it needs to. We all think cancer and heart disease are terrible diseases that need to be treated, yet we think anxiety and depression are just “disorder” when they too, are in fact diseases. 45,000 people each year die from suicide, and 50{fb9a4be0d6494174e6be9660e119e25a878ea9b5c7f2169440a84f81fc131373} of those are caused by depression and anxiety. There are a lot of different medications that can be prescribed, but there are also a lot of natural supplements for anxiety.

What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder

GAD is “an anxiety disorder marked by chronic excessive anxiety and worry that is difficult to control, causes distress or impairment in daily functioning, and is accompanied by three or more associated symptoms (such as restlessness, irritability, poor concentration, and sleep disturbances).” I have suffered from anxiety for years and took a prescription medication for almost 8 years. As I am someone who preaches health and fitness, I do think a lot of the worlds issues could be solved by diet and lifestyle changes, I know that is not the cure for everyone. After getting off of prescription medications I needed to find a new outlet to deal with my anxiety, and I turned to natural supplements. Magnesium is actually a mineral in the body that has several “jobs” it helps to carry out. It has been shown that a decrease (or deficiency) in magnesium can actually cause a lot of problems within the body, and it is greatly overlooked as a common deficiency.

Benefits of Magnesium in the body

Magnesium has been proven to help decrease the effects of stress and anxiety on the brain! Now, this does not mean magnesium is the end all of the symptoms (you can still get panic, sweating, heart palpitations) but it can eliminate the brain symptoms. Magnesium decreases anxiety symptoms by:

  • Increases GABA receptors (receptors in the brain that inhibit neurotransmitters) which allow the brain to “turn off”.
  • Decreases stress hormones (such as cortisol) and decreases the “fight or flight” response by relaxing muscles
  • Stabilizes blood sugar
  • Acts as an anti-inflammatory

All of the above symptoms can be what causes GAD in many people. By eliminating one (or all) of these symptoms, it can greatly decrease the amount of anxiety you feel. Other roles of magnesium within the body include increasing enzyme activity, energy production, DNA protection and electrolyte balance. Again, all of which are incredibly important.

Natural sources of Magnesium

With that being said, magnesium does not only come in pill form. In fact, a lot of Americans that eat a balanced, nutritious diet can get their recommended amount of magnesium through food. Foods high in magnesium include spinach, dark chocolate, almonds, pumpkin/sunflower seeds, avocado, banana, salmon, broccoli and much more! So, if you are someone who doesn’t like to take added supplements, food is a great way to get the magnesium you need!

So, if you are someone who suffers from anxiety, has tried medications and is ready for something natural, I suggest getting your magnesium levels checked and maybe trying a natural social anxiety supplements!
